Sketch of the day!

This posting is in response to concerned visitor, Steve Buccellato. He feels that the 'Sketch of the day' should be work done the same day it is posted. I feel that my sketch of the day should be any work of art that catches my fancy, irregardless of the day I drew it. The previous post was of art I did a few years ago, and maybe Steve wanted to see something more recent. If that is the case, here are some layouts from my latest project for Tokyopop. And there you have ...The Sketch of the Day!

I like this. I agree with Steve, a sketch of the day should be one done that very day, or at least relatively recently. Title your old sketch posts "From the sketch vault" or something.

By the way, I saw your Star Trek manga, and I gotta say, while being very well drawn, it dodn't look particularly _MANGA-ISH_ to me. It looked like Don Hudson drawing a small comic book.

Perhaps I'm wrong, because I KNOW there is quite a bit of stylistic diversity in Manga, but still I think that in order for something to be called "Manga" implies that the art look Japanese somehow, whether it be in the character designs, or in the use of idiosyncratic japanese conventions.

Steve's Battle of the Bands does that, I think. I mean, it's clearly drawn by an American, but he does the japan-style character distortions and wacky, high-energy, cartoony layouts and action stuff that I think are associated with the manga style. But your Star Trek story doesn't so much. They are squarely Don Hudson- American. The only thing Manga about it was that it was in a small-sized book published by Tokyo Pop.

Again, lest you think I'm just picking on you- because I'm not, I think you're a terrific artist- I think it's a well drawn Star Trek story. I've been an avid Star Trek fan from _before_ TNG, and I've read more than my fair share of Star Trek comics, and this is a good addition to that body of work.

But is it Manga? Is it _supposed_ to be Manga? Am I way off base with the whole Manga thing?

You have a valid point Allen. I was less concerned with following a certain style, as opposed to nailing the likenesses. I am working on a style that more faithful to a traditional Manga style.

I think my story stands out from the rest, and that's good, but I think that the point was to draw a Star Trek Manga. Not a small Comic book drawn by Don Hudson. The next job will show a stylistic improvement.
