Ebony Magazine

Did you know that there is a continuing comic serial in the back ofEbonyMagazine? It's drawn by Denys Cowan and I had a chance to ink the August 2012 installment. I have been following the story for a while and I don't know how it's going to end.

Maguire did these pieces for a Justice League trading card set. I was able to make a copy from the originals because I knew the inker J. Rubenstein. Great stuff!

Fun With Ps6

I am having fun with the new version of Photoshop and it behaves a lot like Corel Painter. That's probably not an accident! I had an old version of the program, so I am learning the new stuff. The Black and White line art I used was an old 'Manga-ish' style I tried out years ago. This page is done clumsily, but I bet if I worked on it more it could look pretty slick.

Ready for Comic-Con?

I will be at the SDCC, but I won't have a table. You can find the FOSTER Anthology at The Artist Alley table FF20. That's Steve Buccellato'sbooth and he would love to meet you! He has a story in the anthology as do I and I have my own variant cover! As for me, I will be at the booth hanging out and signing whatever is put in front of me. Are you going to San Diego this year? Have fun!

'FOSTER" Anthology

The Foster Anthology has been put to bed and it should be available at the San Diego Comic-Con! I'm happy with how my story turned out, even though it was a rush (what else is new). Take a look at the colored version of the page I have postedearlier.

The Spider-Man Press-Up

There is something cool about getting exercise advise from Spider-Man! This is an article from Esquire Magazine UK and it looks pretty effective. Maybe next month, there'll be weight-lifting advice from The Hulk.

Marvel Universe Art

I think it was a great idea to catalogue all the Marvel characters and put it into a book. All of their stats and a short origin. I don't know who might have come up with the idea( Shooter maybe?), but there was so much great art that came from the series. I am posting a few of my favorite pieces from the series. Art by Murphy Anderson, Jerry Ordway and Kevin Nowlan. Inks by Joe Rubinstein. I drew a few things for The Marvel Universe Index, but they were horrible!

TravelZoo Commercial

About a year ago, I drew some storyboards for a travel website called TravelZoo. I was sent the 60 second commercial and I was pleased to see that they kept a lot of my direction!

My 'FOSTER' Art

My friend Brian asked me to contribute to an upcoming Anthology for his 'Foster' book! It's an eight page story and I may do a variant cover for it as well. Brian tweeted this page out already, so I'll share the before and after of the page. Click the link and check the review! The book is really great!

Even More Art by Garcia-Lopez

Two Garcia-Lopez drawings from the DC Comics Who's Who books.
I think it looks better in black and white! They lost a lot of detail when printed in color.

Father and Daughter?

I've noticed the similarities.

I like to look at other artists' work! When I first saw Jim Lee's pencils, I liked his energy and detailed pages. Take a look at some his earlier work on Uncanny X-Men

Advertising Art

I did some storyboards for an AD agency, trying to sell Cable TV to a Filipino audience. How might you do that? You can use celebrities or promote native language programming or target your pitch to the head of the family. The head of the family is usually the Grandmother. I picked up a few things working for them. Not much pay, but a good cultural education.

Sunday, April 29, 2012

I have been waiting for the Expo train to open for about a year. In a city in love with the auto, this light rail is exactly what the people who live here need. I grew up in New York City and I know the benefits of using mass transit. Easier commute, spending less for gas, greater property value for those who own near a station.
My wife and I took the train and we find it good!

New Mutants By Bret Blevins

I have not been blogworthy lately, but let me make it up with a a few pages from Bret Blevins! I think he had a lot of fun working on The New Mutants. Great characters and you can see by pencil pages, the story had a lot going for it. I got these copies from the editor way back when. You can see the his balloon placement and Bret's notes as well!

More Garcia-Lopez!

Cap'n's Comics and I have been going back and forth with an appreciation of Jose Luis Garcia-Lopez! I have gone thru my flat files for a few more pages that I hope you will enjoy. Check his site here.
Right back at you!

Art by Lee Weeks

I loved the work that Lee Weeks did on Daredevil! He was following the Mazzuchelli run on the book and he did not stumble at all.

Art by Garcia-Lopez

Cap'n's Comicspost reminded me of some more Garcia-Lopez pencil scans I have! Take a look at the great composition and page layout.

Quaker Makeover

A subtle change with the iconic Quaker oats man. I think it's dopey. If they wanted to change him, just find another model for him. Read the article

Art Board

As everyone else goes 100% digital, I am still using pencil, ink, erasers and opaque correction fluid. So when I visit the art supply store, I try the newest materials available. I recently bought a Canson Paper product called 'Manga Art Boards'.
They've been focusing in on the comic book crowd and I thought I would give it a try. I did everything I that I would usually do when I draw a page of comic book art. I thought it was pretty good paper.

Art by Adam Kubert

I wish I could remember the exact issue of The X-men this is from. I do know it's penciled and Inked by Adam Kubert!

Wondercon

I went to Wondercon yesterday but got a call for a job and had to leave. I stayed just long enough to take a cheesy snapshot!

Art by Jon Bogdanove

I used to do background inks for Al Milgrom maybe 20 years ago and he inked this issue of X-Terminators. I was able to make copies of the pencils with and without lettering. Joe Rosen did it in the old-school way with a lettering guide. I like how Bogdanove wrote his own dialog in the pencils!

Art by Alex Ross

When I worked for Marvel way back when, I would love to visit with the editors there and chew the fat. I was really friendly with the editor of a then yet-to-be-published book called Marvels and I fell in love with the painted pages! So much work, expertly done! There were copies of the pencils as well. As the book hit the stands, I pulled the pencil copies out of the trash. Looking at Alex's art got me interested in painting in gouache and watercolor. I really enjoy his work!
